Burma Briefing No. 4

This briefing examines how the European Union, one of the most powerful political and economic blocs in the world, has so far failed to use its influence in an effective and productive way to help promote democracy and human rights in Burma.

Divisions within the EU have weakened the EU’s influence and resulted in a weak and ineffective response that has had no significant impact on the dictatorship in Burma.

The EU should use its economic influence as leverage to ensure that the regime finally engages with the UN in entering into genuine talks.
